Within Our Bones

A young urbanite looking to the internet to fill the void he feels, and finding instead something that cripples his already tenuous ability to connect with other people. A bordertown stoner navigating an evening of random violence, and learning something about his friends that he'd rather not know. An intellectually-snobbish college student discovering that he can only come to terms with his lust if he puts it behind glass. These are the walking wounded of America, and their agonies are explored in the pages of Within Our Bones.

Collecting short stories and flash fiction that first appeared in a variety of literary journals, as well as several works that have never before been published, Within Our Bones brings together the short fiction written by Marcos Soriano in the years following his cancer diagnosis and treatment. United by themes of spiritual discomfort with the physical body, and physical discomfort with spiritual conceits, Soriano's stories introduce the reader to a range of characters grappling with the meaning of life as it's lived in an imperfect state. Often bleak and depressing, always affecting, these are not easy stories to read. That said, when you find a moment of hope or redemption in this collection--fragile and fleeting as it may be--it rings true.

Map of Fog 3

"If the great Studs Terkel were with us today, and if he took an interest in interviewing various people in the San Francisco area with diverse and fascinating backgrounds, Map of Fog would be something he might have made... this delightful zine asks intelligent and provoking questions to those being interviewed, with a focus on what brought them from such disparate backgrounds to San Francisco... As if the compelling interviews weren't enough to merit high regard, there are also a few pages dedicated to giving an informative and historical look at fraternal organizations that still exist in one San Francisco district. For those who enjoy reading about history and culture--especially people familiar with San Francisco--this should unquestionably be in your possession!" --Bob Goldie, for MaximumRocknRoll (a top 10 zine)

Cost: $4
Format: half-size zine
Contents: 28 pages, 20 pictures, 15000+ words

Map of Fog 2

“Marcos Soriano’s Map of Fog #2 is a little slice of San Francisco anthropology. Soriano looks at his homecity with a journalist’s eye and a zinester’s heart. His second issue is divided into six sections “Nerds” (in this case, a local Dungeons & Dragons club), “Massers” (Critical Mass), “Vandals” (Project Hype’s sticker tagging), “Slackers” (stoned genius), “Punks” (a busridin’ piece), and “Homeowners” (weirdo/cool art houses) each essay packed with photos and illustrations. Soriano’s a great writer and his episodic writing is full of humor, well-recorded dialogue, and smartly rendered insight. Much recommended.” — Sparky, for Microcosm

Cost: $3
Format: half-size zine
Contents: 24 pages, 21 pictures, 8500+ words

Map of Fog 1

"Map of Fog is a non-fiction zine telling tales of the city of San Francisco. The writing is crisp, clear, clean, mature, and dead-on. I loved "Jumper at the Hyatt" which is about the speaker's reactions to someone jumping off the building where he works. I also loved the interview "Lead to Gold" which is all about when the interviewed person got stabbed and what happened then. Ultra-vivid, concise, smart. Recommended." --Laura-Marie, for Zine World

Cost: $3
Format: half-size zine
Contents: 24 pages, 18 pictures, 10,000+ words
